As we all sat glued to the television set supporting our respective Senior High Schools in the National Science and Mathematics Quiz, we were dazzled as to the dexterity of the students answering the questions. They had a few seconds to answer their major questions and even lesser for a bonus question. The quiz mistress was also at her best and she was an authority in the Sciences and Mathematical areas. This has been the nature of the quiz for more than fifteen years.
One was filled with pride if his/her school won the contest either at the preliminary stages or the final contest. Over the years, several schools have won this prestigious competition as it has carved a niche for itself in the annals of education in Ghana. Schools such as, Pojoss, Presec, Opoku Ware SHS, Prempeh College, St. Augustine’s College, Mfantstipim School etc etc have won this prestigious competition and therefore have their names carved into the educational history of this country.
Fast forward to the year 2015, and i was privileged to witness a contest between Adisadel College, Presec and ArchBishop Porter Girls at the semifinal stage of the National Science and Mathematics quiz. I really admired all the contestants though Adisadel College won the contest. The finals was between Prempeh College, Adisadel College and the University Practice SHS( from Cape Coast). Though they were all well prepared for the contest, Prempeh College carried the day with Adisadel College and the University Practice SHS taking the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
I will like to thank the organizers of the competition, Prime Time Ghana and their partners, Ghana Education Service and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) for a good initiative. 2016 is just around the corner and most of the schools are girding their loins to compete in the NSMQ. Better luck to all the schools in 2016.
